Why come fly fishing in Patagonia? Chilean Patagonia is very green and has many fish-filled rivers.
Trout and salmon inhabit them, creating an ideal playground for fishermen. Fishing in the fjords is also popular and is done from a boat along the coastline. The natural mountain lakes are also a great place for fly fishing with breathtaking scenery.
Areas known for fishing
Chilean Patagonia begins with the Puerto Montt region. The nearest river is the Petrohue, north of Puerto Montt. The volcanoes Osorno and Calbuco shape a magnificent landscape.
From Puerto Montt and southwards, the Chilean coastline is indented with fjords and numerous rivers that flow into the ocean. Mountain and plateau lakes and glaciers begin at these latitudes.
Fishing in Chilean Patagonia
The profession of fly fishing guide is first and foremost a passion. However, one cannot improvise oneself as a guide because this profession requires not only a solid knowledge of fishing, but also of rivers, the ecosystem, the fish and navigation in rafts or catarafts.
The rivers in Chile are so large and wide that a boat with oars is needed to take full advantage of them and reach the banks and lagoons. Two swivel seats also allow anglers to cast their flies on both sides of the boat.

Fishing is "catch and release" or "no kill". One fish per day per angler is allowed, but few anglers take them unless the animal is injured. This allows the fish population to remain constant, so that you can enjoy this activity for a long time to come.
Affordable prices
Unlike European fishing destinations such as Scotland, Iceland or Slovenia, Chile is still an affordable country. It is possible to do 2 weeks of fishing with a guide, nights and board included for less than 7'000€ (9'000 CHF).
To reach Puerto Montt from Europe, it takes one and a half days of travel but you will not regret it.
A plane ticket costs about 700€ (850 CHF) and internal flights are cheap. A bus system with extremely comfortable sleeping berths for night travel is also an excellent and cheap transport solution.
